Transmission electron microscope
An instrument that fires electrons through an ultra-thin sample to image structure down to individual atomic columns.
The standard way to establish a nanoparticle's size and shape. The sample must be thin enough for electrons to pass through and stable enough to survive the beam — which is why biological samples are usually frozen first.
