Spectroscopy

Definition

Working out what something is made of by measuring which wavelengths of light it absorbs or emits.

Every material has a characteristic pattern of absorption and emission set by the energy levels available to its electrons and its bonds. Spectroscopy reads that pattern back. It is the cheapest, fastest and most-used class of measurement in materials work.
