Surface plasmon

A collective oscillation of the electrons at a metal surface, which absorbs light at a wavelength set by the particle's size and shape.
The reason a suspension of gold nanoparticles is red rather than gold-coloured, and the basis of a whole class of biosensors: anything that binds to the particle's surface shifts the resonance, and the shift is measurable as a colour change.
