Definition
Designing and building biological systems that do not exist in nature, rather than modifying ones that do.
The engineering framing — standard parts, characterised behaviour, composition — applied to living systems. It works better than sceptics expected and worse than its founding metaphors promised, because biological parts do not compose as cleanly as electronic ones.
