Biosensor

Definition

A device that turns a biological binding event into a measurable signal — a current, a colour, a frequency shift.

Two parts: something that recognises the target (an antibody, an aptamer, an enzyme) and a transducer that converts binding into a number. Most of the engineering difficulty, and most of the reason explanations stop early, lives in the transducer.
