Determining the order of bases in a stretch of DNA or RNA.
The cost curve here is the reason modern biology looks the way it does: the first human genome cost around $2.7 billion and took thirteen years; the same read now costs a few hundred dollars and takes a day. Everything downstream became affordable because this did.
