Peer review
Definition
Evaluation of a manuscript by other researchers before a journal publishes it.
A filter, not a guarantee. Reviewers rarely see raw data and almost never repeat the experiments; they check that the reasoning is sound and the claims are supported by what is presented. Published means it passed that check, not that it is true.
