Structure

📅 Day 1: Introduction to Metabolomics & Data Exploration

  • Fundamentals of metabolomics, analytical platforms (LC-MS/GC-MS/NMR), and applications in precision medicine.
  • Biomarker discovery workflows, study design selection, and understanding raw vs. processed data types.
  • Overview of public metabolomics repositories including MetaboLights and Metabolomics Workbench.
  • Hands-on Session 1: Explore, browse, and download disease-related metabolomics datasets from public repositories.
  • Hands-on Session 2: Interpret experimental metadata, identify study groups, and structure baseline datasets using Microsoft Excel.

📅 Day 2: Statistical Analysis & Metabolite Profiling

  • Standard workflows for data quality assessment, handling missing values, normalization, and transformation.
  • Understanding statistical significance, metabolic variation, and fold change analysis in disease states.
  • Theory behind Principal Component Analysis (PCA), volcano plots, and hierarchical clustering heatmaps.
  • Hands-on Session 1: Perform statistical analysis, generate PCA clustering, and build volcano plots using MetaboAnalyst.
  • Hands-on Session 2: Construct and interpret differential expression heatmaps using ClustVis and Excel tools.

📅 Day 3: Pathway Analysis, Biomarkers & Precision Medicine

  • Metabolite identification, annotation strategies, and functional pathway enrichment analysis.
  • Biomarker selection strategies, case studies, and interpreting Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves.
  • Mapping metabolic networks using KEGG and Reactome to generate publication-quality biological figures.
  • Hands-on Session 1: Query unknown compounds in the Human Metabolome Database (HMDB) and map biological pathways using KEGG Mapper.
  • Hands-on Session 2: Execute pathway enrichment in MetaboAnalyst and design custom biological network diagrams using BioRender.
